It’s been a while since I’ve organized my office desk, and I found a newspaper clipping. Witness of the times.
It was a column article in the Yomiuri Shimbun that appeared in the I remember… about half a year ago, I think, my wife was going out in the morning and she said, “Dad, this is…
He said to me and gave me… When I read it again, it was a pretty good article, and I can’t help but introduce it to everyone.

“Oki no Kuni.
Tears of a cow that I saw in

The first time I went to Oki was in March of 1975.
I didn’t have any particular knowledge, but I was looking at the map and thought, “There’s going to be a lot of things here. It’s an island where a lot of people were swept away.
It seems to be influenced by the culture of the Korean Peninsula.

Oki, Shimane Prefecture, is the island of Shimanae in the west (Nishinoshima Town, Ama Town, Tomoo Village) and Shimago in the east (Oki Island Town).
Consists of. It is also known as the place where important historical figures such as Emperor Go-Toba and Emperor Go-Daigo were exiled.

At the time, there was a lot of “off-island” going on here and there.
It was a period of accelerating circumstances where people were moving off the island for economic and other reasons. In the years to come, rural areas across the country will become increasingly depopulated, but I
I thought, “I’ve got to take a good look at an island somewhere while I still can.

On Chiuuri Island, where we first got off the boat, there was a man named Kumajuro.
I met an uncle who seemed to be very nice. We lived a life of half-farming, half-fishing. “Go upstairs and take a rest,” so I took him at his word.
They told me interesting stories about how to catch abalone.

Since then, I’ve been to the Oki Islands several times, but it’s been three years since I’ve visited an elderly couple.
My uncle was dead. I was shoveling snow on a heavy snow day and I said, “I’m cold, I’m tired,” and I put my foot in the kotatsu, and I had a brain hemorrhage….

‘Oh, you’re the one from that time. Thanks for sending me the picture.
My grandmother remembered me. She said, “My grandpa was so happy that my sister in Tokyo was able to stretch me so big.
This time, I started hanging out with my grandmother.

The four islands of the Oki Islands have deep cultural roots everywhere.
Let’s explain this while watching “Oki no Kuni. I was impressed that they say “Oki no kuni” instead of “Oki no shima” over there.

The ancient Japanese culture was evident everywhere. Birth in the birthing shed.
A temple where women who are menstruating are not allowed to visit. Earth burial, the custom of burying the body in a coffin while it is still seated. A lot of people say, “I don’t want my bones burned.
He said. This is a genie boat. Already, there was a fresh discovery in everything I saw.

The bullfighting, which is only held in Shimago, has a frenzied atmosphere, but
I was moved to tears by the losing cow. When I heard the owner’s story, I thought, “No way, it must be sweat,” but when I looked at it and compared it, I was sure
Only the losing cows are blinded.

Culture doesn’t come about all of a sudden.
I felt that it was something that had been cultivated over a long period of time in the land. The “heart” of the island where most of them spent their lives comforting and watching over the exiles who died in Oki.
I was deeply struck by (Editor: Kazuaki Nagai)

It’s good writing….. It was like an uncle and an old lady I met in Oki.
Moreover, it expresses the Oki region very well. ”Tears of a losing cow…” it’s true. The defeated cow has tears in her eyes, shows her tail to her opponent and bows her head.
Skulking away. Now you have a chance to win. But when it comes to grand sumo, they fight for about half an hour, horn to horn, and it’s an epic fight. The Oki no Gyutsugi is a
There is a theory that it was started by the islanders who wanted to comfort Emperor Go-Daigo after he was exiled from the island.
It is said that in the past, both Shimamae and Shimago were actively practiced. It is only now that he remains on the island.

I was reminded by the story of an elderly couple in Choburi. It was when I was a senior in high school. My high school was in Ama town, and I went to school by boat. In that ship.
I wonder if Matsutani-kun is here…there was a young man on the boat looking for me. What is it? – No.
We are supposed to be staying at your house today…”, “Eh, is that so…”, “So I want you to take me to your house…”.
this and that. I had no choice but to take him home.

My mother later told me that a tourist (a young man) she met on the roadside on her way back from Urago asked her something, and while they were talking, it seemed like a trip without money.
It turns out that we haven’t even decided where we’re going to stay today. My poor mother thought, “Well then, you’ll have to stay home tonight…
This is the first time I’ve ever heard of it. For some reason, I remember that night’s side dish was fish stewed in soy sauce. In addition, the young man who was traveling without money was actually a student at Kyoto University.
That night, the Kyoto University student lectured me, “Study hard… It’s a nostalgic sepia-colored memory, though.
In the thirties of the Showa era, Oki was an island with such a high standard of living.
