講演会
昨日（５日）、一昨日（４日）と二日続けて講演会を聞きに行った。
一昨日がリーガロイヤルでの手嶋龍一、
昨日が帝国ホテルでの桜井よしこ。両名とも１００年に１度と云われる世界恐慌下での激動するアメリカ、
中国、日本の３国間に焦点を絞っての話であった。手嶋龍一は、バラク・オバマ大統領就任演説を如何に読むか、
鋭い切り口で正面から捕らえた解説であったが、桜井よしこは、歴史を紐解き、
大統領演説の裏に隠れたアメリカと中国の日本戦略を鋭く抉り出す内容のものであった。両名とも今が旬の評論家、
何れも１千名近い聴衆を集めていたが、物音一つせず皆が引き込まれるように聞き入っていた。
その中で私が一番印象に残ったのは、桜井よしこの言葉、「国家は経済によって滅ぶものではない、志によって滅ぶのだ」。言葉は少し違っているかもしれないが、
確たる志を持たない今の日本人を喚起する痛烈な言葉であった。

Each of the lectures attracted nearly 1,000 people, but not a single sound was heard as everyone was drawn in.
What struck me the most was the words of Yoshiko Sakurai: “A nation does not perish by its economy; it perishes by its aspirations. The language may be a little different, though.
These were poignant words that evoke the Japanese people of today who have no firm aspirations.
