ソウル訪問
初の韓国訪問。
念願かなって韓国へ、と云う訳では無い。寧ろ嫌々と云うか、浮世の付き合いとと云うか、実は、今年のロータリー世界大会が５月２８日〜６月１日にかけソウルで開催されたため、その本会議（５月２９日）に出席するため無理矢理引っ張り出されたというのが正直なところ。
小生が抱いていた韓国は、急激に発展はしているが、新旧入り混じってごちゃごちゃとしており、キムチの臭いが漂い、道端にはゴミがちらばりと云った、雑然とした街のイメージであった。。ところが、行って驚き見て驚き、カルチャーショックもいいところ。
２８日９時３０分に関空を出発、インチョン空港着１１時２０分。入関手続を済ませ、一路ホテルへと向かったが、先ず驚いたのが道路の広さ。高速道路が片側５車線から６車線。日本は２車線が普通、広くてもせえぜい３車線。ところがその倍が普通。一般道にしても片側５車線がごく普通。走っている車は普通車以上、軽自動車クラスは先ず見ない。しかも目に入ってくる建物は超高層マンションばかり。２０階から３０階の高層が２０～３０棟、いや５０棟はあるかも。そんな高層マンション群が点々とある。しかもそれが街中ではなく、田んぼや畑の真ん中にそびえ立っている。所謂、農村地区に高層マンションが何十棟と建っているのである。日本の農村のイメージとは１８０度違う。牛や豚はどこにいるのか？。農家のおじさんやおばさんは、あの超高層マンションから野良着を着て田畑に行くのか？。小生の頭の中は真っ白になってしまった。小生の好きな村内の牧歌的な雰囲気は何処にもなく、文化の香りなど全くしない。近代国家というか、いかにも作られた街が、そこにあった。

高層マンション群。ソウル市外から数キロも離れた、田畑に囲まれた村中に、こうしたマンション群が点々とある。

First visit to Korea.
I don’t mean to say that I went to Korea after my longing. Actually, the Rotary World Convention was held in Seoul from May 28 to June 1, and I was forced to be dragged out to attend the main meeting (May 29th) of the convention.

After completing the immigration procedures, we headed for the hotel, but what surprised me first was the width of the road. The highway is five to six lanes per side. In Japan, two lanes are the norm, and even if it’s wide, it’s still three lanes. However, double that is normal. Even on a regular road, five lanes per side is the norm. The cars on the road are more than just regular cars, and you don’t see the light car class first. In addition, the buildings you see are all high-rise condominiums, and there are 20 to 30, or maybe 50 high-rise buildings on the 20th to 30th floor. There are many such high-rise condominiums in the area. What’s more, it’s not in the middle of the city, but in the middle of the rice fields and fields. So to speak, dozens of high-rise condominiums have been built in rural areas. It is 180 degrees different from the image of a Japanese farming village. Where are the cows and pigs? Will the farmer’s uncle or aunt go from that skyscraper apartment to the fields in stray clothes? My mind went blank. There is no idyllic atmosphere in the village, which I like, and there is no scent of culture at all. It was a modern nation, or rather a city that had been built.
